ADHD

At Fish Creek Chiropractic, your Calgary Chiropractor, we love to deal with families for their Chiropractic needs.  While educating Calgary parents about the importance of a properly functioning nervous system and how Chiropractic works to keep that nervous system working properly, we frequently get the question asked “can Chiropractic help with my child’s ADHD?”.

Before we get into answering that question lets get into just exactly what ADHD is.  ADHD is short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and is characterized with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. The behavior exhibited by a child with ADHD is usually seen as being disruptive and unacceptable by parents and teachers, and can be closely related to learning disabilities.

The primary form of intervention for ADHD is prescription drugs.   The Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics, 1996, stated that in the US there were 3.5 million children being affected by ADHD and the number of kids being treated with medications has been doubling every 2 years.  As a Calgary Chiropractor, I really hate to see children taking medication, although there is a time and a place for it, one can’t wonder if these prescriptions are given out to easily and with not enough exploration into alternative choices or lifestyle changes.

In the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), Oct 2004, they discuss a case report of a 5 year old child who had been treated with ADHD meds for 3 years unsuccessfully.  This child then started chiropractic care and received 35 adjustments over a course of 8 weeks. After the 27th adjustment his medical doctor took him off his medications because his symptoms had reduced so much.  At Fish Creek Chiropractic, your Calgary Chiropractor, we have also noticed results similar to this by receiving feedback from family and teachers about the reduction and/or resolution of the ADHD symptoms.

Diet can have quite an affect on ADHD symptoms as well.  The University of Adelaide in Australia did a study on 130 children between 7 and 12 on the affect of adding fish oil to their diet.  It was noted that after 3 months behavior dramatically improved.  One can’t help then wonder what other dietary changes can make differences in these ADHD symptoms.

At Fish Creek Chiropractic we realize that chiropractic is not the magic cure all for every health problem that people have, but we do know that all health problems do stem from a combination of physical, mental, and chemical stresses in a persons life.  When these stresses are beyond your body’s ability to adapt then we see problems start to arise.  In children with ADHD it would be interesting to see just what their consumption of refined carbohydrates, sugars, soda pop, wheat products, pasteurized dairy is in relation to their consumption of fruits, vegetables, clean water and a good ratio of omega 3 and 6 fats.

These are things that we at Fish Creek Chiropractic look into when we are assessing how we can help patients and families who are suffering the affects of ADHD.  We have to take into affect the physical, chemical, and mental stresses in your life and then look at ways to reduce some of the stresses and to increase your tolerance to these stresses by increasing the efficiency of your nervous system and adding other healthy lifestyle advice.
