Got an ear infection?  See your Chiropractor.

I am pleased to hear at Fish Creek Chiropractic, your Calgary Chiropractor, that I am getting more and more parents telling me that they have heard from family, friends, or co-workers of the benefits of Chiropractic associated with childhood ear infections.  As encouraging as that is and as happy that that makes me that word is spreading,  I still see patients coming in with a history of ear infections and tubes in their ears that had no idea that chiropractic was even an option.  I would just like to share in this article some of the studies that have been done regarding ear infections so people can use this information to make an informed decision on how they manage their child’s ear infections.

Ear infections, or Otitis Media, is characterized by an inflammation of the middle ear and is usually more of a complication of other childhood complaints like the common cold, sinusitis, and sore throats.  By age 2, 33% of all children have had 3 or more episodes and approximately 66% have had at least one attack.  Some risk factors may include lack of breast feeding, second hand smoke, day care centers, and upper cervical Subluxation.

One of the earlier treatments for this was removal of the adenoids and or the removal of the tonsils which in 1999 the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that evidence supporting the efficacy of the operations is limited.  Other interventions are Myringotomies (lancing of the tympanic membrane) which allows fluid to be released for a short time but they found that the opening quickly closes and 98% of children who received myringotomies experienced a recurrence after 53 days.

A common treatment used now that was started in the 1960’s is Tympanostomy Tubes, where a drainage tube is inserted and kept for 6 months.  98% of children undergoing the procedure have a recurrence within 2 months and 25% of the patients have total hearing loss 7-10 years later.  Medical intervention also has their answer to the problem through the use of antibiotics, but many of the times that they are given (27% of the time) the indications were inappropriate.  This means that the fluid build up was without the presence of microbes which are unresponsive to antibiotics.

A better understanding of the reason why the ear infection occurs and a knowledge of the anatomy involved may give us more of a logical way to treat and prevent them from occurring.  Within the middle ear exists the Eustachian tube and its job is to clear fluid and equalize pressure.  The tensor Veli Palatini Muscle (TVP m.) is the muscle which allows the Eustachian tube to clear fluid buildup.  If the Eustachian tube is obstructed even partially, which can occur with colds, sinusitis, and sore throats, the accumulation of fluid with inflammation and/or infection will result.  The TVP m. controls the opening or closing of the Eustachian tube, and if the nerve that controls the TVP m. has interference then the Eustachian tube will not function properly.  Chiropractors remove this nerve interference and restore proper drainage of the middle ear.

In JMPT in 1996 46 children with ear infections received chiropractic adjustments in the upper neck and 93% of all episodes improved, 75% in 10 days of fewer and 43% with only one or two treatments.

When we can break down the mechanics of why the disease process exists we can then look at logical ways to correct this disease process.  I am a firm believer in correcting underlying problems rather than merely patching the symptoms that are caused by this underlying problem.  If you would like more information on Chiropractic and its role in ear infections or any health issue, please contact us at Fish Creek Chiropractic, your Calgary Chiropractor, at 403 271 7224.
