Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

We deal with all sorts of health issues for Calgary residents.  One common symptom that people in Calgary seek chiropractic care is for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

As a Chiropractor I see many people present to my Calgary Chiropractic office worried about the possibility of having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or how most people state it as just “carpal tunnel”.  I believe that this fear is mostly brought on by the growing awareness of this problem as well as most of us know someone who has had the surgery to “fix” their carpal tunnel issue.

Lets get a clear idea of what Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is before we get into just exactly what you can do about it and how seeing a Calgary Chiropractor fits into the picture. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when one of the nerves that pass through the wrist becomes compressed. Symptoms include numbness, weakness, tingling and pain in the fingers and hand.  A common test for diagnosis would be to tap the palm side of your wrist and see if that agravates any of the numbness and tingling into the hand and fingers.

Although there can be many causes for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, I believe that some of the main trends that I have seen while being a Calgary Chiropractor are repetitive hand motions and excessive computer work where the hand is put in an extended position for long period of time.  I think that it would be hard to find someone that would say that the amount of time that people spend at a computer is decreasing in our society so I think that it makes sense why we would see an increase in injuries associated with this activity.

One common intervention for correction of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is surgery. During surgery to correct carpal tunnel syndrome, a surgeon cuts ligaments that surround the median nerve in the wrist to relieve pressure on the nerve.  Scars can be commonly seen on the palm side of the wrist for people who have had this type of surgery.  Other interventions include splints, steroid injections, massage, accupuncture, and chiropractic care.

Calgary Chiropractors have provided people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with a lot of reilief and even complete recovery.  One of the ways that Chiropractic can help is to relieve what is called the “double crush”.  This is when a nerve has 2 areas of irritation on it.  When a nerve has one area of irritation it may not show any symptoms, but when a nerve gets 2 areas of irritation then symptoms can occure anywhere along that nerve.

In the case of Carpal Tunnel the Median nerve can be compressed in the wrist for a long period of time with no symptoms, but when the root of that nerve is compressed in the cervical spine it can manifest as symptoms just in the wrist and hand.  When Chiropractors adjust the areas of the spine that are irritating the nerve at it’s root, the symptoms further down that nerve will simply resolve.

Calgary Chiropractors are professionals in assessing the spine for areas of nerve interference that can be causing all kinds of health problems to occure.  At Fish Creek Chiropractic we would be happy to discuss your concerns towards Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the options that are available to you before you think of surgery.
