Healthy Body Healthy Mind

You may have experienced some sort of “out of body” experience in you life, but the fact remains that our brain is connected to our body.

The brain controls every function of the body but it is not a one way street. The body can have a huge effect on the brain. Staying fit and active will give you a healthy mind-body connection.

When I was going through Chiropractic school for some stupid reason I also decided to take courses to achieve a Masters degree at the same time. Not very well thought out on my part… but very beneficial in the end.

Anyway, I had a ton of class time as well as studying to do. At times life seemed quite overwhelming and there were multiple times where I would be studying late into the night and my alarm would go off telling me that the next day was here and sleep wasn’t in the cards…

I began to cut back from my daily exercise because I felt that it was lower on the priority list with all the studying that I had to do. My healthy body healthy mind was getting out of wack with too much emphasis on the mental workouts.

Over time I started to notice a trend… the days that I went to the gym I was able to sit at my desk and concentrate a lot better and retain information at a much higher level. At first I thought it was just me because I really am just a happier person when I do something physical every day but apparently this is true with all of us.

As I advanced through school I became exposed to all the overwhelming information on how the brain is stimulated by movement of the body, most of which comes from moving the spine. When we don’t move we rob the brain of essential nutrients that it needs to be healthy. If these brain areas are not stimulated, through movement, they will begin to waste away just like a muscle that isn’t used.

The more I learned about this the more I mixed in walks, bike rides, and yoga including stretching. I used to do it only for the physical benefits but I began to do them more to sort out all of the information in my head. A win win situation for a healthy body healthy mind.
