Learning From the Wisdom of the Elderly

In the movie Dumb and Dumber, actor Jim Carey stated “old people, although slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose”.  Now I don’t want to get into the driving habits of people some may consider old, but according to some new research we can learn a lot from the wisdom of the elderly on how to live a happier and more fulfilling life.  Apparently the elderly are much happier than those generations younger than them and in the following video I explain some of the common lifestyle choices that are responsible for this happiness.

I think that my favourite piece of wisdom from the elderly was the statement that we should treat our bodies like we are going to need them for 100 years.  I think that just like any mechanical device we own there is preventative maintenance and panic maintenance.  Preventative is where you supply the device with what it needs on an ongoing basis to optimize function and to prevent anything major from happening, while panic maintenance is more just letting things run and fixing anything that breaks along the way.  Obviously with panic maintenance there is a lot of down time and loss of production of the machine when things do break down.  The same goes for our bodies.  If we don’t make time to take care of our bodies then we better make time to be sick.

This trade off in time between maintenance and chronic disease was a big thing with the elderly where they thought of chronic disease as a “jail sentence” due to the fact that they were still alive but unable to do the things that they wanted to do.  There are many people that use chiropractic in the panic way and are unaware of the preventative measures that can be taken by having a properly functioning spine and nervous system all of the time and not just when they are in pain.  If you are interested more in preventative care please do not hesitate to book an appointment to discuss this further.
