How often should you see your Calgary chiropractor?

“How often should I see a chiropractor?” This is one of the most common questions I’m asked when people first visit Fish Creek Chiropractic. In fact, it’s typically one of the first questions anyone asks when visiting any chiropractor.

The answer, of course, depends on the nature and extent of your injury or condition and the treatment proposed.

If you’re suffering from a serious injury, you may need to see the chiropractor two or three times per week in the beginning, when your body is in its worst condition. As your condition improves, the doctor may cut back visits to once or twice per week, until the condition has completely healed.

Many of my patients, however, regularly visit to prevent illness, stay healthy, avoid injuries and improve their overall quality of life. In fact, regular visits to a chiropractor can help you maintain your overall sense of health and wellbeing.

Regular visits to my chiropractic office can provide the following benefits:

1. More Energy

If you’re in any degree of pain, you may feel rundown or lack energy. That’s because your body is taking any excess energy and directing it toward your ailment for healing purposes. If you can eliminate the pain, you free up some of that energy. Chiropractic care helps to manage the pain by correcting misalignments of the spine, thus releasing a bit of pain and tension. Less pain usually means more energy.

2. Clearer Thinking and More Concentration

Your ability to think, concentrate, and remember is due to how efficient your brain and nervous system function. Chiropractic care can help both work more efficiently. When the joints in your spine are moving correctly, your nervous system is allowed to function as it was intended, resulting in improved communication from the brain to the body. Many patients report feeling more alert and, well, smarter after visiting my office.

Not all sleep is the same. Have you ever gotten 8 hours of sleep but still feel sluggish or tired? Chiropractic care and wellness adjustments can help you get the quality of sleep you need by improving nervous system function by correcting any misalignments or subluxations in the spine. Athletic performance is affected by a combination of strength, flexibility, speed, and coordination. When the spine exhibits imperfections in movement and alignment, the results can create irritation in the nervous system and interfere with the optimum functions of all other systems. As a result, your athletic performance suffers, whether it’s running or hitting a golf ball. Regular chiropractic visits can treat and prevent many different ailments that often plague athletic performance. (There’s a reason that 90% of all world-class athletes use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and increase their performance potential.) And yes, I have improved the golf score of many patients over the years.

5. Reduce Stress

Stress is a reality of modern living and is a part of everyone’s life. However, regular visits to a chiropractor can help you manage your stress levels. While there are many sources of stress, one of the effects of chronic stress is muscle tension and contraction, which can lead to uneven pressure on the skeleton, which in turn leads to subluxations. Chiropractic adjustments help to ease nerve tension, which in turn eases the stress on certain parts of the skeleton by the removal of subluxations. Removing these subluxations — therefore achieving a balanced spine — is a crucial element of managing chronic stress. Many of my patients have talked about leading a less stressful life due to their regular visits.

Health, wellness, and optimum performance have always interested Dr. Cain. As a kid and early adult, he spent a lot of time training for the goal of being the best hockey player that he could be. This quest brought him to different levels, including junior hockey in Flin Flon Manitoba, Northern Michigan University, The Calgary Flames minor league system, and then over to Europe. As the level of competition increased, it became more apparent that even small increases in performance could make a large difference in what level a player could reach. His experience really motivated him to research optimum performance in athletes. It made sense to him that, if the brain and nervous system control the entire body, the better that this system works, the better the person works. This led Dr. Cain to his next path, Chiropractic School in Atlanta, Georgia. Along with graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Cain received a master’s degree that focused on athletes and human performance. As fun as it was to work with athletes of all different levels, he started to shift his focus more towards family practice and educating people on not only chiropractic, but also on the way they eat, move, and think. Dr. Cain has always loved the city of Calgary and all that the mountains had to offer. So in 2004, he decided to move here and start his chiropractic practice. Since that time, he has found it very rewarding to help the people of his community reach their health goals and to expand their minds to what is possible by making healthy lifestyle choices.
